Magic Cookie Bars

Here is a recipe that is one of my kids all-time favorites. These cookies have become a holiday tradition in our house and once you try them, I think they will become one in yours as well.

Recipe makes 20 cookie bars.

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1-1/2 cups shredded coconut
1-3/4 cups chopped nuts (*I usually use either peanuts or pecans)

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F (325 degrees for glass dish).
  2. Coat a 13×9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. In the pan, combine the graham cracker crumbs and the melted butter/margarine. Press the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of the baking pan.
  4. Next, Layer the crumb bottom evenly with the coconut, then the chocolate chips.
  5. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over chocolate chip layer.
  6. For the top layer, sprinkle the nuts evenly over the sweetened condensed milk layer.
  7. Press the nuts down gently with your fingers.
  8. Bake 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
  9. Cool. Cut into bars.
  10. Store covered at room temperature.
